How to Select a Micro‑Pump & Key Selection Parameters

Micro‑pumps are widely used for small‑flow liquid/gas transfer in medical devices, analytical instruments, environmental monitoring, and industrial fluid systems. Below are core selection logic and critical parameters.

1. Fluid Medium

  • Medium type: Liquid (water, chemical reagent, solvent, urea solution), gas, or mixed gas‑liquid. Corrosive, viscous, particle‑containing fluids require special material matching.
  • Material compatibility: Diaphragm, valve, pump chamber material must resist corrosion. Common options: EPDM, PTFE, silicone, FKM. Avoid material swelling, dissolution or particle shedding.
  • Viscosity: Higher viscosity reduces actual flow rate; confirm the pump’s applicable fluid viscosity range. Particulate‑laden media may cause valve blockage.

2. Flow Rate

  • Nominal flow rate: Usually given for water at standard atmospheric pressure. Unit: mL/min, L/min.
  • Working flow: Flow will drop under backpressure. Select pump with 20%‑50% flow margin above your required actual flow, do not just match nominal value.
  • Flow stability: For precision instruments, pay attention to flow pulsation; some applications need buffer chamber or multi‑head pump to reduce pulsation.

3. Pressure Performance

  • Maximum outlet pressure: The maximum pressure the pump can output. Match system backpressure (pipe resistance, filter resistance, nozzle pressure).
  • Vacuum suction capacity: For self‑priming requirement: check maximum negative pressure / self‑priming height. Important for drawing liquid from lower‑level reservoirs.

Note: Flow decreases as outlet pressure rises; review pump flow‑pressure curve is essential.

4. Power & Drive Mode

  • Drive type: DC brush motor, brushless DC motor, stepper motor.
    • Brushed: low cost, limited service life.
    • Brushless DC: long life, low noise, suitable for continuous operation.
    • Stepper: supports precise flow adjustment.
  • Voltage: Common 3 V, 6 V, 12 V, 24 V DC. Confirm power supply condition.
  • Power consumption: Critical for battery‑powered portable equipment.

5. Physical & Environmental Constraints

  • Size & weight: Compact micro‑equipment has strict space limits.
  • Noise & vibration: Medical, lab instruments require low noise. Diaphragm micro‑pumps generate inherent pulsation and vibration.
  • Operating temperature: Ambient and medium temperature range. High‑temperature fluid will shorten seal life.
  • Protection rating: If used in damp or dusty environment, check IP rating.

6. Service Life & Reliability

  • MTBF / cycle life: Diaphragm and valves are wearing parts. Intermittent vs 24‑hour continuous operation have very different lifetime performance.
  • Leakage rate: Especially for gas sampling, micro‑leakage will distort test data.

7. Control Requirements

  • Fixed‑speed: simple on‑off control.
  • Adjustable flow: PWM speed regulation, analog voltage control, stepper drive.
  • Need feedback? Some pumps offer speed signal output for closed‑loop control.

8. Special application requirements

  • Medical: biocompatible materials, non‑toxic.
  • Gas sampling: low dead volume, minimal gas adsorption.
  • Urea / SCR micro‑pump: anti‑crystallization, resistant to urea medium.

Simple selection workflow

  1. Confirm fluid medium → select wetted material
  2. Define required actual flow and system backpressure → check pump P‑Q curve, reserve margin
  3. Confirm self‑priming / vacuum requirement
  4. Choose drive & control method based on working mode (intermittent / continuous)
  5. Check dimension, noise, lifetime, environment conditions
  6. Pre‑sample test under real‑system conditions is highly recommended.
